Movie – Ender’s Game: A

It’s hard for me to reconcile that I liked this movie. The book was a major catalyst for my love of reading science fiction and I was certain it couldn’t be properly adapted to the screen. But all the themes were there. All the scenes were there. The casting was spot-on. The things that were dropped weren’t glaring enough to be missed. And, of course, it was absolutely gorgeous. Space battles have never been rendered so artistically outside a pure animated film. I would’ve liked to have seen more of the battle room though. Now I just plead with the studio that they don’t film the universally-unloved sequel books.

Movie – Prisoners: A+

It’s been quite a while since I enjoyed a thriller this much. It was consistently, and masterfully, suspenseful. It overflowed with amazing performances, especially from Jackman. It had a constant state of uncomfortable dread that continued to haunt after the film ended.

Movie – The Help: B

Certainly nothing profound, but it flowed with that ease movies of the subject seem to have. Most of the central characters seemed fully imagined, but most of the antagonists were quite flat, though perhaps mocking in this intentionality. Good performances but nothing outstanding.
