Movie – Red 2: C-

A while back, I read Mary-Louise Parker was quitting acting because internet trolls were too mean to her. I initially thought that sounded like an overreaction, but after seeing her in Red 2, I can understand the level of vehemence that could have potentially been flung toward her. Every time she speaks in this film I want to stab my brain to remove the offending memory. Her character was beyond annoying, going so far as to suck away the joy I would usually have when viewing the shenanigans of her co-stars. It certainly didn’t help that the story got progressively dumber as it went. The dialog sounded like a first draft. The first film veered wildly from the source comic, but stayed on an entertaining course. This one veered even further, careening through the railing and off a cliff.

Movie – Monsters University: B+

I’m not sure why they thought a parody of college life would make for a good PG film, and most of its problems stem from that. The animation is still top notch, most notably when in the “human world,” and the busy scenes full of monsters were beautiful. The new characters were a motley pile of “OK” with the exception of Dean Hardscrabble, whose design was sheer awesomeness. Naturally, the talented voice cast did a great job. Unfortunately, Pixar is just no longer a standard, and Monsters University is just another unnecessary sequel. Futurama’s “Mars University” episode remains the best animated college story.

I much prefer biopics about a specific time frame versus those covering someone’s entire life, and with the majority of The Queen taking place in a week’s time, it was right up my alley. Helen Mirren is perfectly cast, and the writing pays reverence while maintaining humor and humanity. Tony Blair’s interpretation seemed slightly over-favorable however. It’s certainly an interesting glimpse into the workings and mindsets of the British government and its monarchy.

I saw this in the theater when it came out but I don’t remember enjoying it as much. It had several of the good kind of plot twists. You know, the kind that make you say, “of course!” instead of, “wait, what?” Plenty of good acting, and from actors I like. I must have been tired or something the first time.
